SA Athletes React to IOC’s Decision to Postpone Olympic Games

South African athletes are looking at the positive side as the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games were postponed until 2021 after an announcement by International Olympic Committee President, Thomas Bach, on Tuesday, 24 March 2020.

After days of on-going talks, various stakeholders decided to put the Games on hold amid the global coronavirus outbreak and taking into consideration that athletes from around the world would not have adequate training under their belts to compete at the highest level.

Marathon runner, Gerda Steyn, took to her Twitter account (@gerdarun) after the announcement on Tuesday to express her feelings, saying:

“#TokyoOlympics will be postponed until 2021. This is obviously disappointing but undoubtedly the best decision for everyone! Please let’s fight this virus and trust that races will proceed later in the year! #daretodream a fitting slogan indeed.”

Long distance runner and 2016 Summer Olympics representative, Dominique Scott-Efurd (@domscottrunSA) shared her thoughts.

“I know this is the right decision, but as an athlete I can’t help feeling sad. Whenever the #TokyoOlympics does take place it’s going to be a such joyful occasion bringing the whole world together again!! @TeamSA2020.”

While the world waits to in anticipation to see what unfolds in the next dew weeks, athletes will be looking to keep fit in their backyards.
