South Africa continues to lead the women’s division in the 2007 ABSA Cape Epic after stage 2’s Uniondale to Oudtshoorn provisional rankings, when 2006 SA Woman’s Marathon Mountain Biker of the Year Yolande de Villiers and Duravit team partner Anke Erlank-Moore edged home more than 22 minutes in front of their nearest competitors on Sunday.
Next home were tourists Kerstin Brachtendorf and Daniele Troesch of team Adidas Fiat, followed by Texner BMC Thoemus partners Myriam Saugy and Fabienne Heinzmann, 22 and 29 minutes later respectively.
De Villiers is a multiple 2006 tour winner, and with January’s Attakwas Mountain Bike Challenge trophy safely in her possession, and her Cape Argus champion partner Anke Erlank-Moore having placed second, their stake on the top spot of this year’s gruelling Cape Epic is strong this early into the race.
No quarter will be given though, with both of these experienced women knowing that the slightest miscalculation or misfortune could set them back in the cruellest manner.
