A brave South Africa lost 3-0 overnight to the powerful 4th-seeded Dutch squad of Orla Noom, Annaliese Naude and Vanessa Atkinson in the round robin stage of the Women’s World Teams Squash Championships in Edmonton, Canada.
Most concerning is the injury which forced team captain Claire Nitch to concede her match to former compatriot Naude 1-3 (9-3, 9-2, (3-9), 9-3).
Argyle put up a strong fight, but eventually lost to the powerful Noom 3-2 in five games ((6-9), 9-6, (1-9), 9-5, 9-0).
Holland’s top seed Atkinson easily won her game in straight sets to SA’s junior on tour, Tenille Swartz (9-2, 9-0, and 9-1).
Nitch is now in doubt for SA’s final pool stage outing against 14th-ranked Germany, who lost 3-0 to a resurgent Australia in last night’s matches.
South Africa remain in with a chance of progressing to the quarter-finals, provided they beat Germany this evening.
Without Nitch, they will have to draw on the reserves with Karen van der Westhuizen likely to play her first match.
The Netherlands is the only Pool D squad guaranteed to progress to the last eight, after their comprehensive wins against Germany and SA.
