SA Open Comes to Durban

A sweltering Durban Country Club awaits the field in this week’s Acer Women’s South African Open, which tees off here on Thursday, and finishes on Saturday.

The R250 000 tournament on the new Ladies African Tour travels to one of the most storied layouts in golf, and which will certainly provide a challenge for the field of local and international players.

The current heat wave and humidity in Durban, combined with plenty of rain that’s making the course play quite long, should make it one of the toughest weeks on the Tour to date.

Spanish Women’s World Cup of Golf team member Tania Elosegui is the newest addition to the field.

Elosegui returns to South Africa for the first time since the February Women’s World Cup of Golf at Sun City.

In only her second season as a professional, Elosegui has already made quite an impact. She recorded two top tens in her rookie season on the Ladies European Tour, including second in the Tenerife Open and fifth at the Swiss Open.

South Africa’s Lee-Anne Pace goes in search of her second victory on the Tour, while compatriot Stacy Bregman is still hunting her maiden victory as a professional.

Bregman has been in contention several times, but has suffered with one bad round on each occasion.

Denmark’s Julie Tvede will also be a big threat this week. Tvede has twice finished runner up on the Tour.

England’s Rebecca Hudson returns as the defending champion.

South African amateurs Kelli Shean and Ashleigh Simon will fancy their chances following third place finishes in last week’s WPGA Masters.

They will be joined in the field by 18-year-old Pretoria amateur Gina Switala, who recently won the Gauteng North Junior Championships by a staggering 16 shots.
