The SA U19 Women drew first blood in their first match against the Namibian side on Wednesday, 13 July 2022.
After winning the toss, the visitors elected to field first as they looked to restrict the SA youngsters.
Half centuries from Kayla Reyneke (72), and Simone Lourens (54), provided a solid foundation for SA. Miane Smit chipped in 28 runs and SA were 172/5 at the end of their 20 overs.
Nthabiseng Nini was the pick of the bowlers for SA after recording 4/18 in four overs.
The SA bowlers dominated the innings, with Ayanda Hlubi (2/16) and Caitlin Wyngaard (2/1) claiming two wickets to restrict Namibia U19 to 38 all out.
Namibia’s Naomi Benjamin and Maria Ngulali took two wickets each, whilst Mekelaye Mwatile contributed with 32 runs in Namibia U19’s bid.
In the second match of the day, SA U19 took on a senior team from the Fidelity Titans and Imperial Lions Women.
The SA team restricted their opponents to 103 runs at the end of 20 overs.
In addition to a solid bowling performance, the youngsters paced their run-chase well to secure a three-wicket victory after finishing their innings on 107/7 in 18.5 overs.
Oluhle Siyo and Kayla Reyneke are captaining the SA side in the series. Speaking to the two young women, the duo expressed mixed feelings of excitement and nerves going into their first international match. However, the pair said they could not wait to put the green and gold on and represent the country.
“We were very nervous going into our first match as we do not want to disappoint the country and ourselves.
“We cannot dispute that it is also a very exciting time. We are working towards the first ever ICC U19 Women’s World Cup. This provides us an opportunity to make history for the country in our home soil.
“The team has been doing great, everyone is getting along really well. We have gained a sisterhood, and we will continue to work together as one big family,” said Siyo and Reyneke.
SA U19’s preparations for the inaugural ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup continue tomorrow, 14 July 2022 at Willowmoore Park in Benoni.
