The Cricket South Africa (CSA) Professional Domestic Women’s League is in full swing and just months after the inaugural ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup, South Africa U19 Women have geared up for their local teams in the league.
In Johannesburg, DP World Lions secured a four-wicket win against Fidelity Titans in the Jukskei derby at DP World Wanderers, on Saturday 14 October.
Titans were put to the bat first and 16-year-old Simone Lourens announced her arrival when she blasted a sensational 102 (114) with an incredible 13 fours and one huge six, to help the visitors to a formidable target.
Lourens was supported by fellow team mates, Amogelang Maphangula 48 (32), Eliz-Mari Marx 34 (42), and Tebogo Macheke was unbeaten on 21* (15), as Titans ended the innings on 264/6.
Jameelah Shaikjee was the pick of the Lions bowlers with figures of 2/55, as the rest of the bowling unit chipped in to restrict the #DaisyLadies.
In response, Lions batter Jenna Evans’ century of 104(97) with a brilliant 12 fours and a six, backed by Nonkululeko Thabethe’s 94(121) provided the Lions with an extraordinary and unforgettable run chase on home ground.
Evans was trapped lbw by Kay-Leigh Tapp whilst Thabethe fell six runs short of a century after being clean bowled by Titans skipper, Robyn Searle.
Tapp (3/35) was the pick of the Titans bowlers, with the dismissals of Sunette Viljoen-Louw 28 (32) and Karabo Meso 1(4). Marx was also destructive with the ball, dismissing Palesa Mapoo and Kirstie Thomson.
In Cape Town, Recon Tactical Free State claimed a five-wicket win against the home team, Western Province
The hosts opted to bat first but the batting unit struggled against struggled against the Free State’s bowling attack. Saarah Smith 84 (94) with 13 fours, and Faye Tunnicliffe 33 (43) helped Western Province to end the innings on 195 all out.
It was Elandri Janse van Rensburg 3/21, Yolandi Potgieter 3/27, and Mampe Ntsane 2/23 spearheaded the collapse the Western Province lineup.
Free State batters set themselves up nicely for a comfortable run chase, with skipper, Zintle Kula leading from the front with an unbeaten 42* (79), supported by *Miane Smit 41 (42) , Mignon van der Merwe 41 (41), and Verunissa Reddy 33 (46) to reach the target with six overs to spare.
In Division 2, KZN Inland secured a massive eight-wicket wicket against Mpumalanga in White River.
The visitors won the toss and opted to field first. The home side struggled to get runs on the board, as they lost wickets at regular intervals. Chris-Mari Bezuidenhout manged to score 41 (46) as the Rhinos were dismissed for 128 all out.
Amanda Ngcobo took a whopping 5/24 in her bowling spell of nine overs.
The Tuskers made easy work of the total as they chased down the total with 17 overs to spare. Megan Wessels 31 (55), with Phumla Mthalane 16* (43) and Nonjabulo Shoba 31* (34) got their team over the line as the Tuskers beat the Rhinos by 8-wickets.
The CSA Professional Domestic Women’s League continues Sunday, 08 October with T20 Challenge action across Division One and Division Two.
