The South African Women’s hockey lost 2-0 in their 9th/16th  final playoff match against Ireland at the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup in Amsterdam on Sunday ,10 July 2022.

The African Champions, who were playing their second match in less than 18 hours, after losing 1-0 to Germany, narrowly missed out on a place in the quarter-finals.

In what was Lilian du Plessis 150th cap at the FIH Women’s World Cup, the women in green and gold were dominated by their opponents losing to two penalty corners which saw Ireland book their place in the next round.

The Irish women looked more well rested and dominated matters right from the start, going into half time break with a one-nil lead and soon doubled their scoreline after halftime break.

South Africa will play the losing team between Chile and Japan on Tuesday in the 13th/16th playoff game and will be looking to end the tournament on a high note, with an opportunity to finish with a higher world ranking.
