The South African Women’s Indoor Hockey squad has been announced for their first international series of 2024. They will play in a six-match away Test series against Switzerland, set to take place at the end of January 2024.
Among the players named in the squad were veterans Jamie Southgate, and Cheree Greyvenstein as well Teagan Fourie, who will bring a wealth of experience to the team. Malikah Hamza was also rewarded for her good performances at the recent Tuanku Zara International Cup in Malaysia and got a call-up.
Elizabeth Porter and Tatum Kroutz could be in line for their first indoor hockey Test caps for their country. Kroutz was awarded the young player of the tournament at the Indoor IPT, showcased her talent with the U21 national side in Chile. Joining her is Cerian Fourie, earning a recall since her last appearance against Ireland in December 2022, after being a part of the U21 national side.
South Africa’s last trip to Switzerland back in 2019, culminated in a memorable 2-all series draw. Southgate, Greyvenstein, Jess Lardant and Fourie were pivotal figures in that squad, and undoubtedly, they will play another important role this time around.
2023 has been a successful year for the SA Indoor Women’s Hockey team. They had a remarkable journey at the FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup where they made it to the semi-finals, they then carried that momentum to clinch the Tuanku Zara International Cup in November in a key win against Switzerland.
The team will be in Cape Town for the Kathea Energy Nkosi Cup, taking place from December 15 – December 18, 2024. During this event, they will compete against Ireland and Namibia.
Head coach of the team, AJ Spieringshoek, is looking forward to the series against Switzerland and is emphasising their robust rapport with Swiss Hockey.
This series will be one coach Spieringshoek will use to prepare for a busy few years ahead, with the team involved in the African Cup in 2024, and then the FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup in 2025, applying his strategy of continuously rotating players to enhance team depth, and ensure readiness for the challenges ahead.
