The Safari Half Marathon turns 21 this year and thousand of runners and walkers will take to the streets of Wellington on Workers Day, Thursday 1 May. This popular Boland road-running event always attracts some of the countries top runners, who compete for prize money totalling R30 000.
To celebrate the event’s coming of age, participants stand in line to win a Hyundai Atos, as well as loads of other exciting prizes. Entrants will be required to complete ten activities leading up to and on race day, to stand in line to win the car. A list of the activities can be found on the entry form and on the Safari Half-Marathon website.
Participants must drop their completed activity form in the entry box at Huguenot High School before 14h45 on race day to stand a chance of winning the car. The lucky draw will take place at the school at 15h00 and the winner must be present when their name is drawn.
The half marathon offers incentive prizes of R1 000 each for the first man and woman to cross the finish line in New Balance shoes, and R500 each for the first man and woman from Wellington Club. Participants turning 21 in 2008 will qualify for a free race entry, as part of the event celebrations.
"We are extremely excited that this event has come this far and wanted to make a big deal out of the occasion by rewarding entrants with some great prizes, including the chance to win a car," said Safari brand manager Aysha Gani.
She added that Safari has been the title sponsor for the past 21 consecutive years, and has formed great partnerships with key stakeholders, which has helped to grow the event to the benefit of all participants.
The event, which is consistently voted one of the best half marathons in the country, is expected to attract close to 10 000 participants this year. Entrants can choose to take part in the 21 km half marathon, 10 km walk or 5 km fun run. Runners and walkers are welcome.
The half marathon starts at 07h15 in Willem Basson Road next to the Boland Rugby Stadium, the 5 km fun run at 07h10 in the same road. The 10 km walk has a later start at 09h45 in Blouvlei Road. All races finish at the Hugenote High School in Wellington.
Walkers, fun runners and beginners, as well as the serious runners, are encouraged to come out and support this event and to bring their family and friends along to enjoy the day and join in the post-event festivities. Crèche facilities are provided for children free of charge.
The race has a great vibe and the scenic country route takes participants through the streets and vineyards of Wellington. There is carnival atmosphere on the field at the finish and people can relax and enjoy time with family, as well as the many farm stalls, craft markets and entertainment.
The closing date for entries is midnight on Thursday 17 April 2008. The half marathon and 10 km walk are pre race entries only but entries for the 5 km fun run will be taken at Sportsmans Warehouse registration points and on the day.

The institute is world-renown for programmes that empower deaf people to become self-supporting citizens. Participants’ donations and certain proceeds from the race are given to this worthy charity to help them with their cause.
