Salima Mukansanga Opens Doors for African Women Referees

Rwanda’s Salima Mukansanga made history when she featured as a fourth official in the France vs Australia fixture at the 2022 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday, 22 November.

Mukansanga is now the first African woman referee to officiate at a men’s FIFA World Cup.

 

In May 2022, gsport reported on Mukansanga’s historic feat when she was named alongside France’s Stephanie Frappart and Japan’s Yoshimi Yamashita for the global showpiece in Qatar.

On the African continent, Mukansanga also made ground-breaking moves. This year, she made history becoming the first woman to officiate at an African Cup of Nations tournament as she took charge of the Guinea vs Malawi match.

She has also previously featured at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, Africa Women’s Cup of Nations and the 2021 CAF Women’s Champions League.

In 2021, the FIFA-accredited referee played her part at the Tokyo Olympic Games as she took charge of the women’s football fixtures.
