Sauls, Venter and Khunou Battle for the SuperSport School Sport Star of the Year Award

Rising stars including golf sensation Gabbi Venter, footballer Cimone Sauls and discus star Lesedi Khunou are up for the SuperSport School Sport Star accolade at the 2022 Momentum gsport Awards.

The awards category celebrates a young girl in sport who is 18 years or under and has excelled athletically. She is seen as a role model to the youth and is on her way to greatness. The focus is on personal improvement alongside outstanding achievement during the year under review (1 July 2021 – 9 August 2022).

GolfRSA’s number-one ranked Venter led Free State to a historic promotion in the 2022 GolfRSA 72-Hole Teams Championship. The 18-year-old Bloemfontein golfer also won her first national title, the 2022 Nomads at the Gary Player Country Club.

“It means so much especially being chosen out of so many people to be a finalist. It really rewarding to know that people are seeing what I am doing and that my hard work is paying off. I think it brings a lot of exposure and a lot of people see you as well as what you are doing. It helps a lot. I would like to become a member of the LPGA tour and this kind of helps in somehow getting funding.”

Captain of the Hoërskool Menlopark High School Girls Team, Khunou claimed gold in the Girls U/19 discus and was placed second in the shot put leading her team to victory at the Super School Series.

“I think, firstly for me a big step in terms of my career as it is my very first professional Awards if I can state it like that. I think it helps me to help other girls to give them the confidence they need so that they can start participating in sports and believe in their own abilities.”

Sauls rounds up this impressive list. She has developed into a formidable defender playing for JVW Girls Football Club in the Hollywoodbets Super League – earning awards at her club which include Defending Player of the Year as well as a Blue Diamond Award that she received shortly after her nomination in the Young Player of the Season category at the Hollywoodbets Super League Awards.

“Firstly, I am humbled, honoured and grateful for the recognition. I am hoping that it will boost my soccer ambition as I would like to play soccer professionally and I look forward and am excited to be a part of the 2022 Momentum gsport Awards,” she concluded.
