Adele Broodryk was the first South African woman to cross the Comrades Marathon finish line, as she finished third overall on Sunday, 28 August 2022.
Broodryk clocked a time of in 6:26:34, behind winner Aleksandra Morozova from Russia and second-placed Dominika Stelmach, who hails from Poland.
Speaking after the race, Broodryk said: “I went out a bit hard and it cost me.
“But it’s my first one and I’ve never run this far, so I’m ecstatic. Next year I’m coming back for the win.”
Broodryk also credited her family on her fantastic debut run.
“My husband supports me so much. I am a full-time worker and a full-time mom as well as a runner. Juggling all those is not easy, and I am lucky to have them with me and their love.
“I’d love to be a full-time athlete. But I am a mom first and a wife and those are my pillars. They are making it possible for me. As long as they are on board and dreaming with me, the sky is the limit.”
This Comrades triumph caps a fantastic year for Broodryk, winning the 50km Om Die Dam Marathon, finishing sixth at the Two Oceans Marathon and ran a 10km personal best at the Spar Ladies Race in Gqeberha, earlier this year.
