South Africa’s ultramarathon queen Gerda Steyn is in the league of her own as she breaks Frith van der Merwe’s down-run record at the Comrades Marathon on Sunday, 11 June 2023.
Steyn pulled off a phenomenal performance from the start of the race in Pietermaritzburg to set a new record of 5:44:54, beating van der Merwe’s previous record just over 10 minutes (5:54:43) since 1989.
In 2019, Steyn became the first woman to complete the Comrades up-run in under six hours, smashing the field and securing a famous win. That was the last time she ran this race.
The 33-year-old now holds the up- and down Comrades records.
In April 2023, Steyn cemented her name into the Two Oceans Marathon history books after completing her fourth consecutive victory as she crossed the finish line in a new course record of 3:29:03.
