South African Cricketer Sinalo Jafta launched the SJ Foundation with the aim to help young girls find a purpose and passion through cricket.
The 27-year-old who finished her schooling career at Stirling in East London, went back to her home town to provide 75 sport bras to young cricketers in partnership with BananaskinZ to help them succeed in the sport that they love so much.
Jafta says her main objective is to help young girls find their purpose through the game of cricket. She also added that she was fortunate enough to be surrounded by coaches and mentors who helped and supported her to where she is today and that is what she wants for these young girls.
Speaking with Rudene Hare, Jafta reveals more about her foundation.
Sinalo, thank you for chatting to us! You started the SJ10 Foundation, please can you tell us about it.
Growing up, I was fortunate enough to be surrounded by coaches and mentors who helped and supported me to be where I am today and that is what I want to do for these young cricketers. Hence, I started this foundation to help young girls chase the adventures that cricket can provide by providing them with support, education and skills development on and off the field.
Why is it so important for you to give back?
To ensure that young girls are protected and making sure that the next generation is well looked after. It doesn’t have to be much, but I believe that showing them that they are supported is the biggest blessing of them all.
You launched your foundation in East London on Saturday, 13 August 2022 where you partnered with BananaskinZ and provided 75 girls with sport bras. Why sport bras?
I first wanted to provide girls with sanitary pads as we all know it is an expensive product and not every young girl can afford it, but I took a step back and looked at what it is that we as sportswomen need the most and sport bras came to my mind.
Plus, as we all know sport bras is an expensive product that not everyone at grassroot level can afford. Hence, I decided to invest in providing these young cricketers in partnership with BananaskinZ with sport bras.
I wish to provide more young cricketers if possible with sport bras to allow them to focus on the game while they train and play.
How was the launch of the foundation?
When we got to East London everything was already sorted, I had little to do because my team and partners already took care of everything. I just had to be present and interact with the girls, sharing a few cricket tips and hand over the bras, it was a lovely day.
I would like to give a special thanks to our Chief of Operations Jason Wehmeyer, our Brand and Marketing manager Kurt Schroëder, our talent specialist who plays for North West Dragon’s Women Evodia Yekile and our Events and Activation specialist Angie Senwamere and everyone else who was involved with helping this dream come true.
How can people get involved with the foundation?
We are on Instagram @SJ10Foundation and they can visit our website sj10foundation.co.za where they will find anything that they need to know about us.
Lastly, what message do you have for future young cricketers?
Everyone has a purpose, whether you want to pursue a career in cricket or something else, make sure you always keep showing up for yourself and remember why you are doing it.
