This week on the gsport IG Live, Lonwabo Nkohla was joined by Springbok Women flanker Sinazo Mcatshulwa following their successful 16 day trip of Europe.

Mcatshulwa started playing rugby in primary school in Langa on the Cape Flats. Since then she has played for her club Busy Bees, her provincial team Western Province and has played for South Africa in both 15’s and 7’s national teams.

“I started playing rugby at primary school in Langa in Cape Town. My teacher came to me and asked me if I can play rugby because at that time I was in sports already, playing hockey and netball in primary school. Maybe it was because I’m tall. I think he saw some potential.”

Mcatshulwa says the journey to get to playing for the national team wasn’t an easy one.

“I was still young when I started playing for the Springboks, but I enjoyed my time. There were a lot of things I needed to get up to standard such as discipline and needed to train consistently.”

In 2018, Mcatshulwa finally realised her dream of representing South Africa and made her debut against Wales.

“I started playing for the WP team in 2015. A few years ago I got my call up to the national training squad. Then I made the end of year tour to Europe in 2018. I got selected for the Springbok team that played in the Africa Cup and qualified for the World Cup.”

The flanker had a dream to represent SA at the 2021 Springbok Women’s World Cup in New Zealand.

“My club in Langa inspired me a lot, my friends as well in the Busy Bees Club really supported and helped me a lot.”

Just before the start of the World Cup Mcatshulwa  sustained an injury but was determined to be fit and strong on the rugby field.

The big dream for Mcatshulwa: “My dream is to play overseas.”
