Thousands of sisters and misters braved the rain weather and took to the streets of Bryanston on Saturday 24 November to “stop” the violence against women and children at Jacaranda FM’s Sisters with Blisters in association with 1st for Women.
The walk, held at Bryanston High School, attracted more than 6 500 people who wore heels, pumps and tackies in the true spirit of the event; to earn their blisters and help raise awareness and money for the cause and the two worthy charities who are active in the fight against abuse of women and children.
Sisters With Blisters is Gauteng’s biggest walk in aid of the 16 Days of Activism for no Violence against Women and Children campaign.
The field of 6 500 people raised an incredible R460 000.00 which was donated on the day to Women and Men Against Child Abuse (WMACA) and Sonke Gender Justice network for the exceptional care and support they provide to women and children affected by the abuse.
“It’s a great event and it’s heart-warming to see how people came out in the rain to show their stance for such a worthy initiative. We’re proud as a station with our partners 1st for Women to be a big voice taking an active stance on such an important issue, and we look forward to thousands more joining us in the future – high heels and all. It’s another ‘lekker to be here” experience but it’s the cause that wins and the charities who get to continue doing their critical work,” said Jacaranda FM’s General Manager, Kevin Fine.
Artists Monique Steyn and Willem Botha, SuperSport’s Arnold Geerdts, former Gladiator Garth Collins and model Christina Storm were amongst some of the celebrities who showed their support for the cause.
“I’ve been attending the Sisters with Blisters for four years now and not only am I doing it for a good cause but it is also a lekker outing. It’s a pity I didn’t win the big prize but I sure left my mark,” said one of the loyal supporters of the event, Bianca Lee from Parkmore.
Kirsty Mochan a student at Wits University was a big winner on the day, driving off with a Kia Picanto courtesy of Kia Motors and Kia Test Drive on Tour.
The walkers experienced a sense of true accomplishment and a vibe that was nothing short of electric, Sisters with Blisters 2012 was a phenomenal success.
JacarandaFM and the team from 1st for Women together with the spirited crowd sent a strong message out – stop abuse, it will not be tolerated.
