South Africa will look to bounce back after a 3-2 defeat to Austria in the opening match of the FIH Women’s Indoor World Cup at at Heartfelt Arena in Pretoria on Sunday, 5 February 2023.
It was the Spar- sponsored side who scored the first goal as captain Jessica O’Connor, who played her 125th game, took a shot from the penalty corner to put the hosts into the lead.
The South Africans had a couple of half chances, but were disappointed when they could not add to the scoreboard. Austria gained confidence in the game and pulled a goal back to level matters.
Marta Laginja gave the Austrians their first lead of the game in the 25th minute with a penalty corner goal. But the South Africans fought back as Kayla de Waal levelled the score 2-2 in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Austria took a 3-2 lead through Laginja who got her second goal of the match.
The home team had a chance to level matters right at the depth through a penalty
but Tegan Fourie could not convert the shot, to hand Austria their first victory.
Speaking to gsport after the match, SA goakeeper Nepo Serage, said: “We really appreciate the support we got out there today. It was a disappointing start, but we are very excited for the games to follow. We appreciate it (the support) and we need you guys to come see the game.”
The South Africans will look to earn their first win on Monday, 6 February, when they take on Netherlands.
