South Africa Earn Bronze at All Africa Badminton Senior Champs

South Africa’s Badminton mixed doubles team finished third at the All Africa Senior Championships, which was held at John Barrable Hall in Benoni on Friday, 17 February 2023.

The South Africans then lost 3-1 to eventual tournament champions, Egypt, to claim the bronze medal.

Amy Ackerman and her partner, Jarred Elliot defeated their Zambian opponents, K Mulenga and E Chipeleme 21-17; 21-13 to advance to the semi-final round, then lost to Kocelia Mammeri and Tanina Mammeri by 22-20; 21-18.

Deidre Laurens and her partner, Robert White lost their semi-final encounter to Doha Hany and Adham Elgamal of Egypt by 21-10; 21-18.

Johanita Scholtz defeated Husina Kobugabe of Uganda 21-13; 19-21; 21-16 to reach the semi-final. She then lost to Fadilah Shamika Mohamed by 14-21; 21-14; 21-16.

Meanwhile, in the women’s doubles, Amy Ackerman and Deidre Laurens beat their opponents Mounib Celia and Tanina Mammeri 21-18; 21-19. The South Africans then went on to win the final 21-19; 21-12.
