Hosts Spain suffered a 3-0 match defeat to Canada, and was also a good day for Italy who beat France on Day 2 of the Billie Jean King Cup at the Estadio de la Cartuja in Seville, Spain, on Wednesday, 8 November, 2023.
Martina Trevisan came back from losing the first set to beat Alize Cornet 2-6; 6-2; 6-2. Jasmine Paolini also followed Trevisan with a 7-6; 5-7; 6-4 win over Caroline Garcia.
However Garcia turned the tables for France in the doubles match where she and Cristina Mladenovic beat Trevisan and Elisabetta Cocciaretto 5-7; 6-2; 10-6 to secure a point for France.
“Every time they wear this Italian skirt, they are able to find the energy that sometimes I think they don’t find in the normal tournaments,” said Italy captain Tathiana Garbin on billiejeankingcup.com.
“Martina showed me how even if it’s a tough start, if you keep going, keep believing in yourself, keep fighting, you can take your chances. Sometimes I’m there and I do have to talk with them, but sometimes I learn from them.”
Hosts Spain v Canada
Then it was the turn of Spain and Canada to face off, but the home team weren’t able to get the better of their opponents, they failed to win a game and ended up losing 3-0.
The spotlight was firmly on Canadian teenager Marina Stakusic who easily dispatched Rebeka Masarova 6-3 6-1.
The 18-year-old was in fine form as she got the better of world No. 65 Masarova. The win is also Stakusic biggest career triumph.
“This is such a special feeling and makes me believe that I belong here,” Stakusic told billiejeankingcup.com.
“It is also super special to win in front of all the Canadians who I have worked with for a long time. What a feeling – it is the most meaningful win for me so far – and it will give me so much confidence going forward.”
