Public nominations have opened for the 2012 SPAR gsport Awards, which lauds South African women athletes, and many valuable contributions made to raise the profile of South African women in sport.

The month-long nominations process will see the public nominate their top candidates across eight categories, including new categories Coach of the Year, Up and Coming Athlete of the Year and Athlete of the Year with a Disability.

Nominations can be made via the gsport website (gsport.co.za/nominations) or via gsport’s social media channels, @gsport4girls on facebook and twitter, and nominations by email can be sent to [email protected]. Nominations can also be sent by sms to 074 529 5619 and will also be received by fax at 086 725 0734.

gsport Founder Kass Naidoo said: “Women’s sports stars are expected to perform on the field. It is our job to laud and celebrate them. That is the main reason why we have opted for a public nomination process this year. We want South Africa to tell us who deserves to be celebrated.

“The judges’ role this year will be to trim down nominations to a final list of three contenders in each category, before a public voting process will take place to find the eventual winners.”

One of the highlights of the Awards will be the unveiling of the 2012 gsport Hall of Fame candidate, who follows an illustrious list of women who have so far been honoured, including international swimming icon, Penny Heyns, eighties netball phenomenon Hazel Gumede, running legend Elana Meyer, former Banyana Banyana captain Desiree Ellis, community sports activist Motlatsi Keikabile, and Eastern Cape women’s rugby pioneer, Dorothy Tsotsobe.
