Department of Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa has landed in Wellington, New Zealand, ahead of Banyana Banyana’s opening FIFA Women’s World Cup fixture against Sweden on Sunday, 23 July 2023.
The Minister Tweeted his arrival on Friday morning, saying: “I have just arrived in Wellington, New Zealand, to join other South Africans who are here, as we cheer for Banyana Banyana as they begin their #FIFAWomensWorldCup campaign. I have met with the team – our pride and joy – and they are ready!”

The Desiree Ellis-led side are currently fine-tuning their preparations for their second appearance at the global showpiece and are aiming to build on their performances since their debut in 2019.
Speaking ahead of the game, defender Bambanani Mbane said: “In 2019, it was our first time, and now we are coming here as African Champions. It won’t be easy but the team has worked hard to be here.”
Adding to the conversation, goalkeeper Andile Dlamini said: “There’s a lot of nerves, anxiety, you know some of the players it’s their first World Cup and we just want to do well.”
Banyana Banyana will take on Sweden at 07h00 SA time.
