Defending CAF Women’s Champions League title holders Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies got their CAF Women’s Champions League campaign off to a bright start, with a 2-1 victory over Bayelsa Queens on Monday, 31 October 2022.
Lelona Daweti was the star of the show as her brace paved the way for Sundowns’ win.
It was in the 32nd minute when Thalea Smidt’s assist was netted by Daweti to break the deadlock.
After the restart, the Nigerian-based team made a few attempts to equalize, however they could not find the back of the net.
The Jerry Tshabalala coached side continued to knock on their opponents’ door and were finally rewarded as Melinda Kgadiete assisted Daweti to her second goal.
For her outstanding contributions on the day, Daweti was awarded the Player of the Match accolade.
Sundowns’ next fixture is against Egyptian giants Wadi Degla on Thursday, 3 November.
