Team South Africa’s Kaylee le Roux claimed gold in the 100m event at the Region 5 Youth Games, in just 12.01 seconds at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, Malawi on Thursday, 8 December 2022.
The teenager clocked 11.97 seconds in the semi-finals that took place in the morning. In the afternoon she started in lane 4 for the final event. le Roux had a slow start to the race, but in the last 30 meters she pushed through to bag the gold medal.
“I’m overwhelmed with this gold. It wasn’t the time I was looking for, but to come back after that slow start is a fantastic feeling. I also started slowly in the heats and again in the final I was last out of the blocks,” said le Roux to Team South Africa.
“During the race a little voice inside me said, ‘fight until the end’, and that’s what I did. I think I have proved everyone who doubted me wrong. It has been a bumpy road for me medically, physically and emotionally. I felt like I was the underdog but I showed that underdogs can win,” she added.
The teenager also hopes that her career would one day take her to the Olympics.
Elsewhere South Africa’s long jump athlete, Timeke Coetzee also claimed gold.
