Tennis Stars Pay Tribute to Retiring Ashleigh Barty

Tributes are streaming in across the globe as World No.1 Ashleigh Barty announced her retirement from professional tennis on Tuesday, 22 March 2022.

The three-time Grand Slam champion shared a video on social media in which she said she would “step away and chase other dreams.”

In her caption, the Australian said: “Today is difficult and filled with emotion for me as I announce my retirement from tennis. I wasn’t sure how to share this news with you, so I asked my good friend Casey Dellacqua (Tennis Broadcaster) to help me.

“I am so thankful for everything this sport has given me and leave feeling proud and fulfilled. Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way. I’ll always be grateful for the lifelong memories that we created together.”

Shelby Rogers, who is the last player to defeat Barty at the 2021 US Open, said: “What a legend. Incredible inspiration on and off the court. One of the best human beings I’ve ever met. Our number 1! Best of luck.”

Emotional Romanian pro, Simona Halep, said, “Ash, what can I say, you know I have tears right? My friend, I will miss you on tour. You were different, and special, and we shared some amazing moments. What’s next for you? Grand Slam champion in golf?! Be happy and enjoy your life to the max, XO – Simo.”

America’s Madison Keys wished Barty well, “An incredible tennis player but more importantly one of the nicest people on tour.

“Congratulations @ashbarty on an amazing career and good luck with what’s next!”

As the tributes and well wishes continue to flood social media, all eyes will be on Barty’s future off the court and how she will further impact the sport.
