2020 Momentum gsport Awards Miss Congeniality recipient and 2023 Netball World Cup project manager, Rabi Mpete, hosted our #PowerOfRecognition edition of gsport Twitter Space Thursday, alongside #gsport17 judges Marsha Cox, Kesa Molotsane, and gsport Content Lead, Celine Abrahams.
The conversation on the Space highlighted that there is more to recognition than meets the eye. The Power of Recognition transcends beyond the person who is being celebrated and inspires young girls, women and fellow colleagues that the impossible is indeed possible. It breeds a seed of hope and inspiration when they see their role models and fellow colleagues celebrated on the stage.
Mpete spoke about the positive example that Momentum is setting for commercial partners with their #SheOwnsHerSuccess campaign, which says that the future is indeed female and is about woman empowerment.
It is encouraging to see what Sasol has done with Banyana Banyana and the Power of Recognition can help them establish a platform that can further expand the story into local leagues and grassroot levels.
gsport Content Lead Celine Abrahams further elaborated how the gsport Newsroom tells the stories of the unknown and then goes on to continue to track their careers, which include the milestones that they achieve and contributes to getting their names out there for sponsors to take note of.
She further elaborated on the success that former Momentum gsport Awards winners go on to achieve. Gymnast Caitlin Rooscrantz who was the 2019 Momentum gsport Emerging Athlete of the Year walked away with a gold medal at the African Championships and a Bronze at the Commonwealth Games.
Looking at the likes of swim sensation Lara van Niekerk whose journey gsport has been following over the years and to see her win double gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games is encouraging as it shows that we are on the right track.
2022 Momentum gsport Awards judge Kesa Molotsane feels that the Power of Recognition has helped in positive strides in women’s sport as we are seeing more coverage of female athletes and administrators.
Sponsors are now lining up to invest in women’s sport which is a step in the right direction. We are taking one step at a time in rectifying past mistakes where we see the payment gap closing and the sponsorship in women’s sport is coming along, although there is still a lot of work to be done, there has been a major improvement. The gsport platforms as well as social media are very important in playing a pivotal role in the recognition of women in sport and we should use these platforms to educate.
gsport Founder Kass Naidoo further elaborated that the gsport stage is not just about unearthing new talent, it is also about ensuring that those who started with us are always part of the journey.
2022 Momentum gsport judge and Hockey legend Marsha Cox added that the Power of Recognition is proof that you should never limit yourself and to believe in the power of your dreams. One thing that the gsport platform has contributed to is the growth of our knowledge, to feel empowered with that knowledge and to be inspired by other women.
