Joanna Thomas (39) was the athlete to beat on Sunday, 17 February 2008, when Simon’s Town was a hub of excitement as over 3 000 top road- and lifestyle athletes took to the streets in celebration of the Puma Peninsula Marathon’s 41st anniversary.
Thomas crossed the finishing line in an impressive 3 hours, 2minutes and 50 seconds, who said that the marathon was extremely tiring.
"The windy conditions on route definitely made the marathon more challenging," said Thomas afterwards. "I initially planned to go easy and managed to catch up to Ursula Frans in the first 2km of the race. We ran together all the way, and it was only at the 40km mark that I accelerated and managed to drop her.
"This is my second Puma Peninsula Marathon, in 2007 I placed 4th in the open women’s category, finishing in a faster time, as the wind wasn’t as strong on the day. I am, however, very happy with my performance," Thomas concluded.
Ursula Frans came in second with a time of 3 hours, 3 minutes and 41 seconds, while Maureen Dladla finished third with a time of 3 hours, 11 minutes and 17 seconds.
Due to extreme wind conditions, athletes where unable to beat the record time of 2 hours and 10 minutes.
Anneline Roffey completed the Puma Half Marathon in 1 hour, 24 minutes and 34 seconds, securing herself a first place position in the open women’s category. Thozama April came in second, while Nicola Collins finished third.
The route for the Puma Peninsula Marathon has been in use since the inaugural race in 1964. With only one exception, this mind-blowing marathon has always been run in a southerly direction from Green Point to Simon’s Town.
