Golden Boot winner Ronnel Donnelly gave her side an early lead before captain Tiffany Kortjie’s second half goal sealed the UWC win for the Cape team to defend their Varsity football title against TUT in Pretoria, on Saturday, 9 August 2024.
It might have been a narrow win for the Cape side, but the scoreline doesn’t show how tight the match was.
It was none other than Ronnel Donnelly who scored the opening goal for UWC in the ninth minute, when she picked up a loose ball from a cross to put the goal past TUT goalkeeper, Glenny Mafikeng.
It wasn’t long before the home team was also on the scoresheet, when TUT captain Tshegofatso Motlogelwa completed a superb finish minutes later, equalising in the 19th minute after a mistake by UWC keeper, Thandeka Ngcobo.
Both teams pressed for that all-important victory when the match resumed, and it was the experienced UWC captain Tiffany Kortjie who scored her team’s second goal, for what would eventually be the title decider.
Kortjie went on to win the Player of the Match award, accolades for the talented player who was also a title winner in 2021 and 2023.
It was more than a successful campaign for the Western Cape side, especially for their forward Donnelly. She walked away with two top prizes, as she was also voted the Player of the Tournament.
To add to that prize, the number 9 also won the Golden Boot prize, after scoring five goals in the season, as she boosted her team towards the 2024 title, adding to prize money earned for her efforts.
UWC goalkeeper Ngcobo captured the Golden Glove award for her exploits in goal this season.
