Building on an exhilarating first day of Telkom Netball League 2024, Day 2 was met by a showdown of spectacular momentum increase by the teams, at Ellis Park Arena in the City of Johannesburg, Gauteng, on Saturday, 27 April, 2024
Despite the odd frustration about the frequency of the sound of the whistle, coaches were not detered from moving into rapid analytical thinking and game plan changes, that gave netball enthusiasts more reason to rise out of their seats.
In unpacking some of today’s games, it was noted that the defence unit of the Flames performed very well, while the Aloes put up a solid performance in the first half, against the Gauteng Jaguars.
At courtside with a keen eye on proceedigns, Spar Proteas Head Coach, Jenny van Dyk said: “This is the type of performance we would like to see, but sustained throughout the full game.
“We need four solid quarters of intensity to maintain the thrilling showdown of performance and mastery, which we can produce.”
SA Netball Head Coach, Jenny van Dyk
Looking at the match between the Kingdom Stars and Tornados in what was a crowd thriller, the Stars kept good composure well into the final moments of the game to win 37-41.
In the last match of the day, the Baobabs from Limpopo played against the Free State Crinums, who have two Netball World Cup experienced players in their team, being Karla Pretorius and Refiloe Nketsa. Crinums proved to be well composed, while dominating in their game plan, and as a result they wrapped things up on court with a 64-35 victory.
Meanwhile, the second day of TNL was also a significant day in the history of South Africa, as we celebrated 30 years of democracy and freedom. And, as we looked over the crowd, players and everyone in attendance we realised that through the power of sport, we have been able to move away from divisions, judgement and have been able to come together to build a common future.
Let us through netball and netball participation restore peace, unity and dignity for all. These are amongst the fundamentals of hosting such a magnificent tournament.
