Tough Start for Basetsana at All Africa Games

The South African Under-20 soccer team, Basetsana got their All Africa Games tournament off to a rough start after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Nigeria, in their opening Group B match in Sale Jadida, Morocco.

The West African side’s first goal of the game came five minutes into the encounter when their captain, Gift Monday struck a powerful loose ball after a failed attempt by the Basetsana defence to safely clear the ball away from the danger zone.

The South Africans found themselves on the backfoot as their opponents dictated play and their confidence pressing forward was evident after their first goal. However, the ladies in green and gold had chances of their own but lacked that deadly effect in front of goal, which was their downfall in their first half.

To make matters worse for the South Africans, just four minutes before the break Zainab Olapade made it 2-0 for the Nigerians, giving them a comfortable lead as they went off into the changerooms.

Better Second Half for Basetsana but Aku Seals the Deal

Going into the second half of the match, Basetsana knew that they would have to get an early comeback to salvage their chances of getting a point. They turned out more solid in the rear-guard, preventing most of Nigeria’s chances up front.

But, again a lapse in concentration in the 64th minute which found them wanting, Cynthia Aku sneaked passed the defence to add in a third goal to down the South Africans.
