Six-time champions TUT got their campaign off to a flying start beating DUT 5-0, while UJ shocked Tuks, defeating them 4-0 in the first round of the 2022 Varsity Football Cup on Tuesday, 11 October.

The tournament is set to take place from the 11-16 October, with all the games set to take place at the UJ Soweto campus fields.

The 2022 edition of the campaign kicked off with 16 goals scored across the four games.

The Red Army showed their intentions from the first whistle and headed into the half-time break with a 3-0 lead over their opponents. DUT had no answers for the high flying TUT side, who added two more goals after the half-time break.

Siphumelele Shamise’s hattrick helped UJ to a very convincing victory over 2021 finalists Tuks.  The Shamise twins showed no mercy as they terrorised the Tuks defence the entire game.

Defending champions UWC needed the solitary goal by Lindokuhle Gladile against WITS to start their title defence on a winning note.

NWU opened the scoring very early on against UL, when Noluthando Mohlontlo netted in the 10th minute of the game. However, UL quickly responded and by half-time, they had a 2-1 lead. As the game progressed, it was quick-firing action, with both sides finding the back of the net, eventually having to share the spoils after a 3-3 fulltime score.
