Two South African women are included in a 3-man South African team to join some of the world’s most promising young triathletes in Tiszaujvaros, Hungary for the International Triathlon Union’s second annual BG Triathlon World Junior Camp, being held from August 16th to 27th.
South African athletes participating in the camp, organised by ITU and their long-term partner the BG Group, include Vicky van der Merwe (who also participated in the 2006 camp) and Carlyn Catherine Fisher.
The 35 athletes from 22 emerging and developing triathlon nations gather together to better their physical and mental training, skills and performance under the guidance of a group of top international triathlon coaches, with the leadership of ITU Sport Development Director Libby Burrell.
The twelve day camp is the pinnacle of the ITU and BG Group’s series of development camps, which form part of the global Sport Development Programme.
The participating athletes are aged 16 to 19, and were selected based on their recent national and regional performances, as well as having shown their potential to compete at a world championship and World Cup level in the near future.
Athletes will receive instruction on training, tactics and related sport science aspects from a number of the sport’s top coaches from USA, South Africa, Croatia, Spain and Australia.
Running in conjunction with the BG Triathlon World Junior Camp is an International Coach Mentor Programme where 12 attending coaches will observe and learn about high performance coaching form the international coaching staff.
