It’s a lousy job, but someone has to do it! I spent Monday afternoon at Kyalami, driving a Wesbank V8 Supercar Mustang around the track for a TV shoot. I was fortunate enough to be interviewed for SABC1’s Blue Couch programme.
They wanted to know what it’s like to be the only female racing car driver in the Wesbank Super Series. It’s an interesting question, as motorsport is one of the few sporting arenas where women compete on equal terms with men.
We spent some time talking about sportswomen in general and the unique challenges we all face, and went on to discuss motorsport specifically.
The issues we spoke about are common to most of us: Are female sportswomen treated differently? Do men make allowances for us, or is it more difficult to be taken seriously? What drives us to put ourselves on the line each time we compete?
It was great to have a chance to share my world, and to take the opportunity to encourage other girls and women to aim high in their sporting goals. The fun part was taking the car out on the circuit, so we could get some action shots in the bag.
Stefan, the cameraman, was wonderful – totally professional and full of enthusiasm. This was just as well, as he spent a lot of time hanging out the back of a Range Rover, inches ahead of the fire-breathing Mustang so he could get some authentic on track footage!
Thanks are due to Dennis Klopper for allowing us the use of the Kyalami circuit, whose new owners have recently given us girls decent bathrooms for the first time – much appreciated.
