It is the halfway point of 2012 SPAR gsport Awards nomination process and the competition is only getting tougher. It has been an amazing year for women’s sport in South Africa which is reflected in the outstanding nominations received to date.
The nomination process is open to any member of the public across eight categories including three new ones, Coach of the Year, Up and Coming Athlete of the Year and Athlete of the Year with a Disability.
Nominations can be made via the gsport website (gsport.co.za/nominations) or via gsport’s social media channels, @gsport4girls on facebook and twitter, and nominations by email can be sent to [email protected]. Nominations can also be sent by sms to 074 529 5619 and will also be received by fax at 086 725 0734.
gsport4girls Founder Kass Naidoo is happy with the nominations these past few weeks. “The standard of nominations this year is very encouraging. We are only two weeks into the process and some of the top athletes and up and coming athletes have already been nominated”
“We have also had good nominations in the Woman in Media category, which means that more women are being given opportunities in the sports media space. We will announce the top three nominees in each category at the end of the nominations process on 30 October.”
2012 SPAR gsport Awards ambassadors Roxy Burger, Mpho Maboi, Anele Mdoda, Shashi Naidoo, Hulisani Ravele, and Liezel van der Westhuizen have been very busy using various media channels to promote greater public participation in the nomination process.
“I have always been very vocal about Women’s sport and promoting it. I now have a bigger platform to do so as an ambassador,” says radio and TV personality van der Westhuizen.
“Things are going really well on the social network platforms. People have been retweeting when I tweet about the gsport Awards. I also have some ideas of people I would like to nominate. My strength is in doing triathlons so I am going to nominate a few triathletes.”
Former child presenters, now rising media stars, Hulisani Ravele and Roxy Burger have also been hard at work promoting the awards. “People ask me about it all the time,” Burger says. “It’s been good and steady so far. I love being associated with such a prestigious event. gsport has done so much for women’s sport and it’s been inspiring to see more women doing really well in sport.”
Ravele says it’s been really great seeing how interested people are in the awards. “When I do interviews people are interested in how I’m involved in the Awards, what there are about and they also want to know who the other ambassadors are.”
“There isn’t enough awareness about women’s sport and I’m happy to be involved in an initiative that is trying to change that.”
Nominations close at the end of October. After that the judges will trim down nominations to a list of 3 names per category. The public will then vote for the eventual winners.
