Uganda’s Victoria Pearls have been crowned as champions of the Victoria Series after the tournament came to a close in Kampala on Sunday, 23 April 2023.
This despite a ball not being bowled due to rain after the hosts were scheduled to face Tanzania in the final at the Lugogo Cricket Oval.
The Pearls were crowned champions of the second instalment of the series as they were leaders on the log standings after 4 games played. The five-team tournament was contested by hosts Uganda, as well as Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and United Arab Emirates.
On their road to the final, Uganda had a three game unbeaten run beating Rwanda, Tanzania, UAE.
The tournament provided all teams with preparation for the 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier.
Looking at the individual awards, the winning Captain Consy Aweko was named best bowler and Janet Mbabazi was voted Uganda’s MVP. Rwanda’s Henrietta Ishimwe was named tournament MVP while UAE’s Kavisha Kumari was named best batter.
More news that came from Kampala, Kenya captain Sharon Juma announced her retirement from international cricket after fifteen years in the game. She was recognized for her efforts.
Uganda will now shift focus to the Capricorn Eagles Quadrangular that has gotten underway in Windhoek. Uganda who were reportedly set to travel on Sunday night will compete with UAE, Hong Kong and the hosts Namibia.
UAE and Rwanda also finished the tournament with four points while Kenya finished at the bottom with one point. Tanzania (four points) was in the final because of a better Net Run Rate.
Zimbabwe had won the first edition in 2019, but they did not defend the title in this edition due to other commitments.
