Ethiopian-born Dutch middle- and long-distance runner Sifan Hassan won the 2023 London Marathon on debut on Sunday, 23 April.
The 30-year-old stopped twice to stretch during the race with a tight hip and lost contact with the leaders, while also nearly getting hit by a race motorbike.
Despite all the stumbling blocks, Hassan finished the race in 2:18:33. Her time was outside the world record in a women’s race of 2:17:01, but it was amongst the fastest marathon debut performances.
