Ethiopia’s Hiyane Lama swept to victory in her first 10km road race, winning the 30th Cape Town SPAR Women’s 10km Challenge in 33:42 in Greenpoint on Sunday, 23 April 2023.
Lama edged off fellow Ethiopian Selam Gebre by two seconds in a thrilling sprint to the line, while Glenrose Xaba, a former winner of the SPAR Grand Prix, finished third in 34.05.
Xaba took the lead for the first eight kilometres until the Ethiopian pair overtook her. In fourth place was Kesa Molotsane (34:07), closely followed by Cacisile Sosibo (34:09).
Elana Meyer, the first-place finisher in the 1993 Cape Town SPAR Women’s 10km Challenge, is a legend in the South African middle-distance world. Meyer was invited as a special guest by the sponsors to help them mark the 30th anniversary of the SPAR Women’s Challenge’s Cape Town leg.
Ethiopia’s Tadu Nare, the reigning SPAR Grand Prix champion, was unable to compete in the Cape Town race since she was a competitor in the London Marathon, where she placed eighth. Nare declared that she would take part in the second SPAR Grand Prix 10km race in Gqeberha on the 27th of May 2023.
