UJ and UWC to Battle for Varsity Football Honours

University of Johannesburg will be aiming to defend their Varsity Football title, while University of the Western Cape will be looking to snatch the crown when the two teams meet in the final on Saturday, 19 August 2023.

On Monday,  14 August 2023, the Gauteng derby took place at TUT Stadium where UJ faced off against University of the Witwatersrand.

The first half of the game remained goalless as both teams’ defence  were firm on the day. However, fortunes changed in the second half.

In the 47th minute, the Orange Army broke the deadlock through a header from Lusanda Mavundla.

It didn’t end there for Mavundla, she scored her second goal of the match in the 70th minute after going one on one with the goalkeeper making the score 2-0 for UJ. Three minutes later, Sbongakonke Mzobe scored the third goal after Wits failed to clear from a corner.

Mavundla is the tournament’s top goalscorer and was named player of the match.

In the second semi-final of the day, UWC took on Tuks. Just 22 minutes into the game Chelsea Daniel’s came through with a wonderful toe poke to put UWC in the lead.

The team from the Cape held on to their one goal throughout the encounter to set up a final against UJ.

Bongeka Gumede of UWC was named player of the match due to her outstanding contribution in the team’s victory against Tuks.
