The University of Fort Hare’s women’s football team showcased determination and skill as they secured promotion to the prestigious Hollywoodbets Super League in a thrilling encounter against Croesus, emerging victorious and earning their place in the national playoffs final of the Sasol League at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein, on Friday, 20 October, 2023.

The team held their nerve in a dramatic penalty shootout after an evenly-matched tie, with the scoreline locked at two goals apiece when the final whistle blew. 

The tension was palpable as the game headed into a nail-biting penalty shootout, leaving fans on the edge of their seats.

Fort Hare’s Unwavering Determination

Despite the scorching summer heat in Bloemfontein, the University of Fort Hare’s shooters converted every one of their five penalties, while Croesus faltered, missing their third spot-kick. The final penalty, slotted home by Nosikho Magqaza, sealed the victory for Fort Hare, igniting a wave of jubilation among their dedicated fans.

Coach Asanda Mnakaniso expressed her elation after the match, emphasising the team’s unbeaten streak and their remarkable achievement.

“No words can describe how I feel right now. Imagine 20 games unbeaten, just imagine.”

The University of Fort Hare’s path to the final followed their dominance of the Sasol league coastal, emerging as the victors and going on to defeat inland winners, Executive Ladies, in the provincial playoff final. 

Their exceptional performance continued in the national semifinals, where they won both matches and topped their pool.

Resolute Defence and Moments of Brilliance

Throughout the match, Fort Hare displayed resolute defence among moments of brilliance. Nizole Ngece’s thunderbolt strike found the top-left corner of the net, giving Fort Hare the early lead. 

Croesus quickly retaliated through Koketso Mahlangu, but Tshepiso Mokabane’s powerful header put the Gauteng side in the lead once again. However, Fort Hare rallied and equalised through an own goal by Lisihlo Duwe, ensuring the score remained level ot the final whistle.

Fort Hare’s goalkeeper, Unnati Gcamgcam, played a pivotal role in their success, making crucial saves to deny Croesus a way to finding the back of the net on multiple occasions. 

Looking Ahead to the Playoff Final

While the University of Fort Hare had already made history by reaching the Super League, Coach Mnakaniso emphasised that they would not ease up in the playoff final against Lindelani. 

Their unwavering determination and commitment to excellence will continue to drive them as they aim to secure further success in their football journey.
