Captain Amogelang Motau scored in the 25th minute to ensure that the University of Western Cape overcame visitors University of Johannesburg 1-0 as the Hollywoodbets Super League weekend’s big winners, at the UWC Stadium on Saturday, 29 June, 2024.
Head Coach Thinasonke Mbuli says she anticipated a tough clash against UJ in week 18 of the League’s ties: “I think the UJ is one of our teams that is currently on form and we can see how they play against us today. But yeah, I think we planned very well for them.
“The plan was to cut the supply from their center-backs, especially Yolanda (Nduli), number 5, and we tried. So, there was not much of a threat because we could stop the supply. But before we talk about their game, I think compliments must go to our players.
“We had a very tough month. If we look back at our past four games, Royal AM, TS Galaxy and now UJ, top 5 teams if we map it out well, so big up to them! Somehow, someway, we couldn’t get a clean sheet like today, but I think 3 points is far better than a clean sheet.”

That victory sees Mbuli’s side move up to second on the log standings behind defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, equal on points with third-placed UJ albeit with a game in hand. The Orange army meanwhile slides down to third.
In a Super Sunday double header, both teams visiting the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium were victorious. Sundowns Ladies cruised past Lindelani Ladies 2-0 with goals from Refilwe Tholakele and Karabo Dhlamini in each half, enough to hand Banyana Ba Style their 14th win of the campaign, wiht Dhlamini scoring her second goal of the season.
Quoted on the Sundowns website, Nonhlanhla Mthandi was pleased with the test from the opponents as it allowed the team to think outside the box:
“They came with a mindset to hinder us from playing our game. It forced us to adapt and find new ways to break through their defence. Games like these push us to innovate and improve our strategies, which will be crucial as we aim for consistent success in the league.”

TS Galaxy Queens ran rampant thumping Durban Ladies WFC 4-2 as Samkelisiwe Selana and Pertule Petersen both scored a brace. Petersen was crowned Player of the Match for her goal poaching exploits and sensational performance.
At the Westbourne Oval eGqeberha, University of Pretoria were held to a 1-all draw by City Lads. Ntando Phahla opened the goal account for AmaTuks in only the third minute but the Stripe Generation were unable to hold on to the lead with Bonolo Thameng, who came in as a substitute, securing the equaliser for the hosts. Tuks now sit seventh in the standings, while City Lads are 14th.
JVW FC earned a comfortable 2-1 victory against Richmond United thanks to goals from Banyana capped players Gabriela Salgado (3’) and Nompumelelo Nyandeni (70’).
“I think coming back from playing home after we’ve played so many away games, this has been a motivation for us that we’ve never lost at home, so we’ve always wanted to keep the record of winning at home.

“I think coming back here, everyone was, yes, a bit tired when we started at first, but then we gained the momentum back again.”
On her performance: “I think when, you know, playing the position that I’m playing, I’m starting to enjoy it now.
“I remember back then it was a position that I was not familiar with, but now that I’m getting more game time in the same position, I think I’m doing really well at it. And, you know, when you enjoy something, everything comes good.”

Up next for the Bedfordview side will be another home clash against bottom-of-the-table Thunderbirds Ladies. In their previous encounter Thunderbirds played to a goalless draw versus First Touch FC Ladies.
TUT Matsatsantsa FC won maximum points on the road after beating Copper Belts FC at the Baroka Global Village. This, before they travel to First Touch at the Oscar Mpetha Stadium next weekend.
In another comprehensive victory, Royal AM Ladies scored 3 unanswered goals at University of Fort Hare to go back to winning ways following one draw and a heavy 6-2 defeat to UWC in their previous fixtures.
