The Momentum Proteas women produced a solid 44-run victory over Pakistan in their first match of the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 competition at Sylhet Stadium in Bangladesh on Sunday, their healthy victory margin putting the SA ladies top of Group 1, ahead of Australia in second position.
Pakistan had no answers for openers Dané van Niekerk and Lizelle Lee, as they made unbeaten scores of 90 and 67 respectively to lead their side to 163/0 in their 20 overs, after they were asked to bat first by the opposition.
In their reply, the Pakistan batters could not hang on to their wickets long enough to produce a match-saving partnership, thanks to a ruthless bowling attack led by Marizanne Kapp, who took three wickets for 16 in her allotted overs.
Kapp was the only bowler to bowl all four of her overs, and was provided great back-up by Suné Luus and Shabnim Ismail who took 2/18 and 2/20 in three overs respectively, with Sunette Loubser capturing one wicket for her efforts.
Pakistan were restricted to 119/9.
Proteas skipper, Mignon du Preez, was delighted with her side’s performance. “Today was one of those days when everything just went our way,” she said.
“I’m extremely proud of the way the team executed all our game plans and went about their business. Full credit must be given to Dané (van Niekerk) and Lizelle (Lee) for setting up the game well for us and giving us a really good score to defend.
“Beating Pakistan in a world tournament is not a simple assignment, and I’m really happy with the way the team played today. We now just look to carry this momentum into the next game, and hopefully playing with the same energy and drive as we did today,” Du Preez continued.
South Africa’s next match is against defending champions Australia on Tuesday 25 March, at the same ground.
“It’s a huge game for us,” Du Preez admitted. “Australia are not a side to take lightly on any day, they are world champs for a reason, but we just have to concentrate ourselves and play the game of our lives come Tuesday, and not worry about the rest.”
