The second day of the SA Students Sports Union (SASSU) hockey week at the Pukke Hockey Academy in Potchefstroom continued the form of the first day’s matches, with thrilling matches the order of the day on Tuesday.
Tukkies enjoyed a 5 – 0 win over Free State in the competition’s premier division, where a classy Kim Hubach bagging a brace, the rest coming from vice-captain Alex Fenwick, Inge Wagenaar and Nicolene Terblanche.
University of Johannesburg (UJ) were also comprehensive 7 – 2 winners over a spirited Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), who never gave up the fight, and shocked the favourites by scoring first through Kelly Dorothy. Although the NMMU forwards troubled the UJ defence on a series of occasions, the Johannesburg girls never looked like losing.
Home girls the North West University throttled the visiting Wits University, scoring three goals either side of the half-time whistle, with the goals spread evenly among the victors.
In the tournament’s B Section, Tukkies B were never threatened by Bloemfontein’s Central team, and UKZN also secured a faultess win over Vaal, but it was the Grahamstown girls who took their net goal-scoring rate to stellar levels, with a 17 – 0 rout of the University of Limpopo.
