WP Claim Kaplan Cup Hat-Trick

Western Province swept to their third consecutive runaway victory in the PricewaterhouseCoopers Kaplan Cup being played in Port Elizabeth when they demolished Gauteng 20-4.

Western Province’s Siyole Lusaseni, Milnay Louw and Sacha West had little trouble in outplaying Adel Weir, Mary Ann Boden and Sharon Le Roux to give the defending champions the match.

In the number two slot Karen van der Westhuizen (WP) found herself trailing 0-2 against seasoned campaigner, Claire Nitch but Lady Luck was not in Nitch’s corner.

Leading in the third game, Nitch was forced to concede, having pulled a calf muscle which left van der Westhuizen with a hollow 3-2 win.

Ranked 44 in the world, Tenille Swartz, the Western Province’s number 1 then needed four games to subdue left-handed Diana Argyle 3-1.

Second seeded Northerns slumped to their third consecutive loss, bowing out to Eastern Province 7-17.

The home crowd was delighted to see Lizelle van Niekerk, Jacqui Trevarthen, Kieryn Keeton and Anlen Murray brush aside Vivienne Doeg, Sonia Pinter, Sonika Fritz and Cara Willoughby to give Eastern Province a 12-4 lead.

Farrah Fenner, presently ranked 1 in South Africa, salvaged some honour by defeating Juanette le Roux in straight games.

Easterns, who trail Western Province by 10 points, inflicted a 20-1 defeat on hapless KwaZulu-Natal with only Samantha Herbert able to notch one game when she lost 1-3 to Angie Clifton-Parks.
