Top seeds Southern Gauteng and defending champions Western Province have booked their places in the final of the championship division at the SPAR Hockey IPT at the Hartleyvale Astro in Cape Town on Thursday.

First up on Thursday, Southern Gauteng extended their unbeaten run against Highveld cousins Northern Gauteng, but made heavy weather of the result after a convincing 2-0 half-time score, to emerge as eventual 3-2 winners.

Thursday’s player of the day Lisa Deetlefs and her team will look forward to a low-key match against EP on Friday after sweating their out-of-town derby, but Sharne Bailey will be savouring her two first-half field goals, which set her team up for certain victory.

Northerns came back strongly in the final quarter of the game, but their two goals (Dani Forword and Louisa Moore with converted short corners) were interrupted by a deciding goal from Carla Botha for a Southerns win.

Western Province played the mid-afternoon game for a change, and clearly enjoyed themselves, routing Eastern Province with four goals after the half-time whistle to add to the six netted before the break.

In action for the tournament hosts were Lenise Marais, Tarryn Bright, Ilse Davids (2), Cindy Brown, Farah Fredericks (2), Vida Ryan and Henna du Buisson (2), all contributing to a top goal-average, placing WP to the top of the overnight leaderboard.

Also letting off steam on Thursday evening were the KwaZulu-Natal Raiders led by Jen Wilson, who sent six goals past their upstream Midlands cousins for their first win of the tournament.

The uninterrupted scoring fest was set off by Terri-Lee Chelin in the twelfth minute, and the captain put another past Midland’s Amy Dyall before the break.

Not long after play resumed Lizelle Hamann took the score to three-nil, and two goals by Kelly Madsen and one by Kerry Gaze completed a white-wash of stunning proportions.

Assuming that the KZN Midlands do not beat the Province fire-eaters in their final fixture on Friday, Northerns and the KZN Raiders will play for pride in the bronze-medal fixture on Saturday, leaving a familiar final to decide where the silverware spends the summer.
