The SPAR Hockey Inter-Provincial tournament’s Section B resumed at the Hartleyvale Astro in Cape Town on Thursday morning as the miserable Cape Town weather continued.
North West, still smarting after conceding a 3-1 loss to log-leaders Peninsula on Wednesday, beat Boland 4-0.
Ilse Fourie added to her personal goal tally from a penalty corner within the first five minutes to set Boland back in their tracks, and national cap Lesle-Ann George added another from a penalty for a convincing two-nil halftime lead.
Shortly after the resumption of play, Heloise Labuchagne put in a third for a successful short corner, and Fourie returned for more spoils from a field goal just before the final whistle.
North West end day four second on the log, equal on points with Wits but ahead on goal-difference, with a realistic chance of a B-section final against Peninsula, considering their fixture versus the under-strength EP Settlers on Friday.
The second match of the day brought the Settlers against bottom-of-the-log Free State who, having suffered the ignominy of a poor tournament, played out to a 1-0 loss for a fourth straight defeat.
Siviwe Qupe scored early for the Settlers from a field goal, and the Eastern Cape side managed to hold on to the lead until the end of the match.
The Settlers will look for strength in their underdog status in Friday’s final pool match against the North West in the hope of finals play-off come Saturday, but will most likely be competing for the bronze medal.
Tournament hot favourites Peninsula must have taken the foot off the gas on Thursday, with coach Gloria Baartman’s team struggling until the 48th minute before netting a field goal courtesy Wendy Kockott against the Witwatersrand team, and the score remained that slim until the match’s closure.
Peninsula is guaranteed a place in the B-Section final, but even though they will be unsure of their competitors, their IPT campaign will leave them with a comfortable expectation of lifting the trophy come Saturday, unless disaster strikes.
