In the women’s contest, Maisa broke clear of the rest of the field to win gold for Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) in 35:44.

Junior athlete Bianca Stoltz claimed the silver medal in 36:10 and her Athletics Gauteng North (AGN) teammate Tinyiko Ndala secured bronze in 36:52.

“It’s not easy to get to this point, but I’ve been trying since 2017,” said 30-year-old Maisa, who is based in Springs on the East Rand of Gauteng.

“A gold medal was not in my mind today, but I just told myself when I get here I have to push myself and at least try to run 35 minutes, which I was able to do.

“It wasn’t easy because everyone who is here prepared for this race and they were aiming to get the position I got, but I think because of my preparation and dedication, that’s where I am right now, and I’m so happy to win the SA title.”
