Weeks after leading Maties to their first Varsity Netball title, head coach Zanele Mdodana speaks about the harsh realities of being a coach in series of Tweets on Thursday, 3 November 2022.

Following the Maroon Machines’ unbeaten campaign, it was a case of fourth time lucky after making it to the final on three previous occasions.

Following her retirement from professional Netball, Mdodana slowly started establishing herself as one of the top sports coordinators, eventually becoming the first Black Head Coach of Maties Netball, at the University of Stellenbosch.

Speaking of the most recent Varsity Netball tournament, the winning coach Tweeted about the harsh realities that coaches in the sporting industry sometimes face.

Six years ago when Mdodana was first appointed, many doubted her capabilities and wondered whether she was able to do what other coaches had failed to do in recent years.

Following her appointment, she said: “I want to have a positive impact on the lives of the Maties Netball players.

“I want to build the team holistically, because it is not only about the performance on the court. Not only do I want my players to be brilliant netball players – I also want them to be brilliant people.

“A coach needs to be many things at different times for different players.”

Fast forward to 2022 and the former Proteas captain made history becoming the first head coach to win the Varsity Netball title for University of Stellenbosch.
