Zimbabwe Women have booked their place for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup global qualifiers to be held next year.
The Lady Chevrons emerged winners of the African Women’s T20 World Cup qualifiers after registering a 13-run win against the Capricorn Eagles of Namibia in a tight, gripping affair.
The Adam Chifo coached side finished the tournament undefeated winning all their seven games against Tanzania, Botswana, Eswatini, Mozambique, Rwanda, Uganda in the semi-final and Namibia in the final.
Capricorn Eagles finished second in the tournament, losing a lone match to Zimbabwe, while Tanzania finished third, winning against the Victoria Pearls of Uganda by 9 wickets with 40 balls remaining in the third-place playoffs.
22-year-old Zimbabwean right arm off-spinner, Loryn Phiri took 16 wickets at an average of 3.87 and an economy rate of 3.35 and was nominated as the bowler of the tournament, while her counterpart, right-hand bat woman Modester Mupachikwa took the batter of the tournament award. Mupachikwa featured in 5 matches, scoring 167 runs with an average of 55.66 and a high score of 44.
Tanzanian all-rounder, Fatuma Kibasu walked away with the player of the tournament award. The 31-year-old took six wickets at an average of 13.00 and an economy rate of 5.85. Kibasu scored 280 runs in 7 matches with an average of 56.00 and a high score of 127 not out, which she scored against debutante Eswatini in the group stages.
Botswana, Cameroon, and Eswatini competed in their first-ever ICC women’s event during the qualifiers. Botswana’s performance impressed fans the most as they won against fellow debutant Eswatini by 195 runs before they defeated Mozambique by 110 runs.
They would later find their match against Zimbabwe, who they did so well to restrict to 113-5 only to be bowled all out for 31 in 13 overs. They went on to lose against Tanzania and Rwanda.
On the other hand, Eswatini and Cameroon found the going tough as they failed to register a single win.
Just like Botswana, Nigeria won two games in their group. The Leonard Nhamburo coached side of Rwanda also missed progressing to the semi-final round after they lost a must win game against Zimbabwe by 52 runs.
Sierra Leone registered a single victory against Cameroon throughout the tournament.
The Global Qualifier will have eight teams, five of which would come from the regional qualifiers, while two will be decided based on the ranking of those teams which qualified for the 2020 Women’s T20 World Cup.
