Zimbabwean FIH Technical official, Sarah Bennet, has been chosen as the sole African woman to officiate at the 2024 Paris Olympics hockey tournament, set to take place in Paris next year.

The International Hockey Federation announced the technical delegates, officials, umpires, and medical officers for the event. Zimbabwe’s most decorated FIH technical official Bennet is no stranger to the Olympic stage as she also officiated at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Speaking to The Herald she said, “To be able to represent FIH, Africa and Zimbabwe as a whole at this prestigious tournament is an absolute honour. Achievements like these only come with hard work, dedication and commitment. There are many hours of learning, tears and emotions.”

In 2019, she became the youngest Zimbabwean to officiate at the hockey Olympic qualifiers.

Besides her international duties, Bennett has been the Secretary-General of the Hockey Association of Zimbabwe since 2004.

Bennett played for the Zimbabwe Women’s National team from 2001 to 2007. Post-retirement, she turned to umpiring and became an FIH International umpire.

Ahead of next year’s Olympics, Bennett will attend the Olympic Qualifiers in South Africa, scheduled from 29 October to 5 November in Pretoria.
