2006 October Woman: Michelle Botes

One of South Africa’s best acting talents celebrates her birthday this month. They say don’t ask a woman her age, so we won’t.

But, we just have to say that, like the rest of South Africa, we are in awe of Michelle Botes; best known for her role as Cherel de Villiers in SABC 3’s hit soapie, Isidingo.

Most women want to be her, and countless men want to date her.

But, exactly what is it that makes her so appealing?

Her superb acting, her enviable dress sense, that beautiful smile – all of it, and the fact that she is an amazing mom.

She loves sport and is especially passionate about skydiving. Interestingly, her favourite sports star is Formula One icon, Michael Schumacher.

Introducing gsport’s Woman of the Month for October, Soap Star, Fashion Icon, and Super Mom, Michelle Botes.

What sets you apart from Cherel?
I have a different vision, different values to Cherel. She lives a powerfully driven life of status and material wealth, for me, life is a two-fold adventure and mysterious.
The journey inwards is as exciting as exploring our beautiful insane physical world.

Of all the characters you’ve played over the years, which did you enjoy most?
“Princess” the St Helena island girl I played in “Arende” I adored; all hormones and windswept emotions, but I LOVE Cherel for her sheer cheek and true grit.

What has been your funniest interaction with fans?
Continually being asked if I know who I am???

What do you enjoy most about acting?
The Mystery of it – finding the truth of an unknown emotion in yourself, and mostly, trying to stay in the now.
Suspending all reality to be in a particular moment in time, and the chance to be in someone else’s skin!

gsport’s theme for October is SUPPORT. Who have supported you in your career?
My first thought goes to writers; the creators of stories.
Authors all over have always inspired and indirectly supported me whenever I wanted to chance something wild (and made me laugh when it all goes pear-shaped!).

How do you balance your career with your role as a mom?
With lots of humour and love – sharing my teenagers lives is the hardest, most joyous lesson in truth and humility, and my proudest moment.
I think career happened when I wasn’t looking – probably learning lines.

Are you sporty?
Yes! A love of exploring nature got me climbing, diving, playing with dolphins, and 17 skydives.
I also love the thrill of winding roads and changing landscapes from the back of an off-road bike.
Oh, and a recent adventure was canopy gliding for unforgettable forest views!

Who is your favourite sports star?
Michael Schumacher.

How do you keep in shape?
Not! But I’m aiming for a skiing holiday, and looking forward to returning with exquisite legs and a tight butt.

What is your biggest joy in life?
Breathing and beauty.

gsport strives to celebrate femininity. How would you define femininity?
Living every texture and aspect of yourself fully – and gracefully.

What’s the most amazing thing about being a woman?
The sensuality of being fluid and strong – and the mystery of emotions.

What’s the best career advice you’ve been given?
Just take the next step – and focus.

Who are your role models?
Leslie Kenton, author of “Journey to Freedom”, Sandra Prinsloo (she sails too), and the women in the rush-hour traffic, handling kids and careers and a smile.

What is your advice to working moms?
Take-aways are relaxing for the soul.

How do you relax?
Under waterfalls, soaking in hot baths, and long walks at the beach… And sunsets… And a massage…
