The twice-postponed Kahuna Surf Series event for novices and future surf stars is set to run at Melkbosstrand in the Western Cape this weekend, with the event scheduled to start at 8am on Saturday, with the finals of the first event which were postponed due to extreme weather and wave conditions at Muizenberg in September.
The first heats of the second event, which could not be held as there were no waves on the first weekend of this month, will begin around 10am with the finals scheduled for Sunday afternoon followed by the prize-giving and awards for both events.
More than 60 entries have been received from as far afield as Kommetjie, the Strand and Hout Bay. They include a squad of eight surfers from the Micah Surf Club in Macassar whose participation has been sponsored by Puma Sports who will cover their transport costs and kit them out with T-shirts, caps and bags.
Despite the strong SE winds predicted for next three days, organisers are confident that the event will proceed as scheduled on Saturday. However, even though the wind drops considerably on Sunday, the waves are expected to be small for the finals of the second event.
The Kahuna Surf Series comprises three events staged at the most popular entry level surf venues on the Cape Peninsula, namely Muizenberg, Melkbos and Long Beach Kommetjie, to give novices and aspiring surf stars the opportunity to gain more experience outside their home break.
The finalists in each of the U10, U12, U14 and U16 divisions for boys and girls receive certificates and prizes sponsored by many of the country’s leading surf brands.
The overall series winners will be crowned after the third and final event at Kommetjie on 1 & 2 December and receive medals and valuable prizes that range from surfboards and wetsuits to footwear, eyewear, surfing accessories and apparel.
The third annual Kahuna Surf Series is sanctioned by WP Surfing and generously sponsored by Reef Wetsuits, Von Zipper eyewear, Kustom footwear, Palmer’s surf wax and accessories, Zigzag surf magazine, Lifestyle Surf Shop, Atlantic Surf, DVG Surfboards, Fox, Lizzard, Surf Zone and Billabong.
Further details on the KSS are available at the Kahuna Surf website, where the Entry Form can be downloaded. Entries close on the Thursday before each event or once a division is full and competitors can enter the next two events on one form.
